Amphibian pulmonary and systemic vascular circuits are arranged in parallel, with potentially important consequences for resistance (R) to blood flow. The contribution of the parallel anatomic arrangement to total vascular R (R T), independent of blood viscosity, is unknown. We measured pulmonary (R P) and systemic (R S) vascular R with an in situ Ringer’s solution perfusion technique using anesthetized anuran and urodele species to determine: (1) relative contributions of vascular anatomy and blood viscosity to R T; (2) distensibility index (%Δ flow kPa?1) of the pulmonary and systemic vascular circuits; and (3) interspecific correlates of variation in these parameters with red blood cell size, cardiac power output, and aerobic capacities. R P was lower than R S in anurans, while R P of the urodeles was greater than R S and significantly greater than anuran R P. Anuran R T was lowest and did not vary interspecifically, whereas urodele R T was significantly greater than anuran, and varied interspecifically. Pulmonary and systemic circuit distensibility differences may explain cardiac shunt patterns in toads with changes in cardiac output from rest to activity. When blood viscosity was taken into account, vascular resistance accounted for about 25 % of R T while blood viscosity accounted for the remaining 75 %. Owing to lower R T, terrestrial anuran species required lower cardiac power outputs when moving fluid through their vasculature compared to aquatic species. These results indicate that physical characteristics of the vasculature can account for interspecific differences in cardiovascular physiology and suggest a co-evolution of cardiac and vascular anatomy among amphibians.  相似文献

The spatial component of input signals often carries information crucial to a neuron’s function, but models mapping synaptic inputs to the transmembrane potential can be computationally expensive. Existing reduced models of the neuron either merge compartments, thereby sacrificing the spatial specificity of inputs, or apply model reduction techniques that sacrifice the underlying electrophysiology of the model. We use Krylov subspace projection methods to construct reduced models of passive and quasi-active neurons that preserve both the spatial specificity of inputs and the electrophysiological interpretation as an RC and RLC circuit, respectively. Each reduced model accurately computes the potential at the spike initiation zone (SIZ) given a much smaller dimension and simulation time, as we show numerically and theoretically. The structure is preserved through the similarity in the circuit representations, for which we provide circuit diagrams and mathematical expressions for the circuit elements. Furthermore, the transformation from the full to the reduced system is straightforward and depends on intrinsic properties of the dendrite. As each reduced model is accurate and has a clear electrophysiological interpretation, the reduced models can be used not only to simulate morphologically accurate neurons but also to examine computations performed in dendrites.  相似文献

Maintenance of a high degree of biodiversity in homogeneous environments is poorly understood. A complex cheese starter culture with a long history of use was characterized as a model system to study simple microbial communities. Eight distinct genetic lineages were identified, encompassing two species: Lactococcus lactis and Leuconostoc mesenteroides. The genetic lineages were found to be collections of strains with variable plasmid content and phage sensitivities. Kill-the-winner hypothesis explaining the suppression of the fittest strains by density-dependent phage predation was operational at the strain level. This prevents the eradication of entire genetic lineages from the community during propagation regimes (back-slopping), stabilizing the genetic heterogeneity in the starter culture against environmental uncertainty.  相似文献

Hummingbirds are known to defend food resources such as nectar sources from encroachment by competitors (including conspecifics). These competitive intraspecific interactions provide an opportunity to quantify the biomechanics of hummingbird flight performance during ecologically relevant natural behavior. We recorded the three-dimensional flight trajectories of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds defending, being chased from and freely departing from a feeder. These trajectories allowed us to compare natural flight performance to earlier laboratory measurements of maximum flight speed, aerodynamic force generation and power estimates. During field observation, hummingbirds rarely approached the maximal flight speeds previously reported from wind tunnel tests and never did so during level flight. However, the accelerations and rates of change in kinetic and potential energy we recorded indicate that these hummingbirds likely operated near the maximum of their flight force and metabolic power capabilities during these competitive interactions. Furthermore, although birds departing from the feeder while chased did so faster than freely-departing birds, these speed gains were accomplished by modulating kinetic and potential energy gains (or losses) rather than increasing overall power output, essentially trading altitude for speed during their evasive maneuver. Finally, the trajectories of defending birds were directed toward the position of the encroaching bird rather than the feeder.  相似文献

Wing kinematics of avian flight across speeds   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
To test whether wing shape affects the kinematics of wing motion during bird flight, we recorded high-speed video (250 Hz) of four species flying in a variable-speed wind tunnel. The birds flew at intervals of 2 m s−1, ranging from 1 m s−1 up to their respective maximum flight speed, which varied from 14 to 17 m s−1 depending on the species. Kinematic data obtained from two synchronized, high-speed video cameras were analyzed using 3D reconstruction. Three species with relatively pointed, high-aspect ratio wings changed wingbeat styles according to flight speed (budgerigar, Melopsittacus undulatus ; cockatiel, Nymphicus hollandicus ; ringed turtle dove, Streptopelia risoria ). These species used a wing-tip reversal upstroke, characterized by supination of the distal wing at mid-upstroke, at equivalent airspeeds ≤7 to 9 m s−1. In faster flight, they used a swept-wing upstroke, without distal wing supination. At mid-upstroke at any speed, wingspan in these species was greater than wrist span. In contrast, at all steady flight speeds, the black-billed magpie Pica hudsonia with relatively broad, low-aspect ratio wings, used a flexed-wing, feathered upstroke in which wrist spans were equal to or greater than wingspans. Our results demonstrate that wing kinematics vary gradually as a function of flight speed, and that the patterns of variation are strongly influenced by external wing shape.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the kinematic and kinetic changes when resistance is applied in horizontal and vertical directions, produced by using different percentages of body weight, caused by jumping movements during a dynamic warm-up. The group of subjects consisted of 35 voluntary male athletes (19 basketball and 16 volleyball players; age: 23.4 ± 1.4 years, training experience: 9.6 ± 2.7 years; height: 177.2 ± 5.7 cm, body weight: 69.9 ± 6.9 kg) studying Physical Education, who had a jump training background and who were training for 2 hours, on 4 days in a week. A dynamic warm-up protocol containing seven specific resistance movements with specific resistance corresponding to different percentages of body weight (2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%) was applied randomly on non consecutive days. Effects of different warm-up protocols were assessed by pre-/post- exercise changes in jump height in the countermovement jump (CMJ) and the squat jump (SJ) measured using a force platform and changes in hip and knee joint angles at the end of the eccentric phase measured using a video camera. A significant increase in jump height was observed in the dynamic resistance warm-up conducted with different percentages of body weight (p < 0.05). On the other hand, no significant difference in different percentages of body weight states was observed (p > 0.05). In jump movements before and after the warm-up, while no significant difference between the vertical ground reaction forces applied by athletes was observed (p > 0.05), in some cases of resistance, a significant reduction was observed in hip and knee joint angles (p < 0.05). The dynamic resistance warm-up method was found to cause changes in the kinematics of jumping movements, as well as an increase in jump height values. As a result, dynamic warm-up exercises could be applicable in cases of resistance corresponding to 6-10% of body weight applied in horizontal and vertical directions in order to increase the jump performance acutely.  相似文献
